Vision
Plum Blossom Potluck Circles are small, intimate gatherings of eight to ten people who come together to share a simple meal, spiritual friendship, and mindful conversation in the Plum Village tradition. Each circle is a chance to slow down, breathe, water seeds of joy, and remember that we are not walking this path alone.
Rooted in Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings on sangha, interbeing, and cultivating joy as a real source of strength, these circles weave together mindful eating, deep listening, shared laughter, and open-hearted dialogue about our lives and the world we share. We honor the food before us, the earth and hands that made it possible, and the precious opportunity to practice compassion and joy in community.

In a world that feels increasingly fragmented by speed, isolation, and political division, many of us long for a place where we can fully see one another with open hearts. Plum Blossom Potluck Circles are offered as a gentle response to that longing. By sharing food, stories, and practice in a small group, we remember that our lives are deeply linked and that spiritual friendship can be a powerful antidote to loneliness, fear, and polarization. These circles aim to offer a nourishing space to touch joy, hold suffering together, and let our understanding grow in the light of a mindful community. May our time together serve as a peaceful act of resistance against greed, hatred and delusion.

This vision has also grown out of my own journey. While walking the Camino de Santiago, I was repeatedly touched by the simple power of breaking bread with strangers who quickly became companions on the path, how a shared meal could open hearts, soften defenses, and remind us of our shared humanity. I realized how rare these unhurried, heartful spaces are in our everyday lives. Dedicating time to Plum Blossom Potluck Circles is my small way of honoring those lessons: creating places where we can sit together, share food and story, and remember that we belong to one another. My hope is that we will strengthen our beloved sangha, feel inspired to host circles of your own so that this spirit of spiritual friendship and shared nourishment ripples outward.

Why Plum Blossom?
The name Plum Blossom gently honors Plum Village as the root of this offering and draws on the rich spiritual symbolism of the plum blossom in Buddhism. In East Asian culture and Buddhist imagery, plum blossoms bloom in the cold of winter, often while snow still covers the ground, and are seen as symbols of resilience, quiet courage, and the promise of renewal. They remind us that the Dharma, and our hearts, can flower even in difficult conditions, and that beauty and insight can emerge from patient and grounded practice. By choosing this name, these circles invite each shared meal, each story, and each act of spiritual friendship to be a “blossom” of understanding and compassion in community, while softly pointing back to the Plum Village lineage that inspires the form and spirit of the gatherings.

Gathering Format
Plum Blossom Potluck Circles are gentle, spacious gatherings of 8–10 people, meeting for about 2–3 hours to share food, spiritual friendship, and purposeful reflection.

-
Arriving & settling – Time to arrive, greet one another, and land.
-
Opening practice – Brief sitting or breathing meditation and a simple contemplation in the Plum Village spirit, pausing to honor all that has brought the meal to the table.
-
Mindful meal – A few minutes of silent eating to truly taste, breathe, and arrive in the body, then gentle conversation as the meal continues.
-
Shared reflection – With clear agreements (confidentiality, deep listening, speaking from the heart), we check in and explore a theme such as joy as nourishment, spiritual friendship, or living our values in a divisive world.
-
Closing – A short silence or guided meditation and a final round of gratitude or insight from each person.
This simple rhythm, arriving, practicing, eating, reflecting, and closing, helps us experience shared reflection as real nourishment for our bodies, hearts, and beloved community.
